Mission

Empowering Voters.  Defending Democracy.

The League of Women Voters promotes participation in elections and provides nonpartisan information to educate voters on issues and candidates.  The League of Women Voters of Charlotte Mecklenburg is one of 15 local Leagues in North Carolina, serving voters in Mecklenburg, Iredell, Rowan, Cabarrus, Gaston, and Union counties.

History

An outgrowth of the women’s suffrage movement, the National League was founded by Carrie Chapman Catt in 1920 just six months before the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution which gave women the right to vote after 72 years of struggle.  The League worked to help 20 million women carry out their new responsibilities as voters. The Charlotte Mecklenburg League was founded shortly after in 1922.  Today the League serves voters through a variety of activities:
  • Registering citizens to vote
  • Providing information on the voting process
  • Sponsoring Get-Out-The-Vote campaigns
  • Educating voters with nonpartisan information on major issues
  • Conducting public issue and candidate forums
  • Publishing candidate responses to questions
