Purple Primaries
Team Leader: Mim Kukowski
mary.kukowski@verizon.net

The Purple Primaries Team is dedicated to educating the community on how primaries now powerfully feed extreme polarization and federal political dysfunction.  Through public presentations, community programs and other information campaigns, they work to motivate and facilitate larger primary turnout by voters across the entire political spectrum, to lead to a more balanced and representative democracy.

Inspiring EVERYONE to vote in primaries - so government works for ALL of us.

The goal of the Purple Primaries Team is to fix a bug in primaries that now feeds
extreme polarization and government dysfunction.

Now widespread gerrymandering has made primaries all important in many races; the
winner of the favored party’s primary is the guaranteed winner of the general election.
Yet primary turnout is very low and dominated by extreme voters on both the far right
and the far left, making our electoral outcomes far less representative than assumed in
a democracy.

With a focus on impacting the next major election cycle in 2028, we work to increase
awareness of this flaw and increase turnout by voters across the political spectrum.

Our Activities

Studies show that people don’t vote in primaries for three major reasons:
  • they don’t think it matters to ultimate political outcomes
  • they don’t know the date of the primary
  • it’s too much effort to gather info on early candidates.
We work to address each of these factors.

We spread the message on the now critical importance of primaries via
  • door knocking
  • tabling at local hotspots
  • post card writing
  • word-of-mouth campaigns including social media
  • public meetings.
In early 2028, we’ll pivot to maximizing turnout by making information on candidates and
primary dates easily available and visible and by engaging in Get Out The Vote
activities in the months leading up to the primary in early March of 2028.
